Commissions

Major commissions last year were Showroom Desks for Paris Ceramics in New York & Los Angeles and Lord Bath's celebration bed for the Millennium. I intend to show and talk about a different commission each month on this page. It may show speculative work or just current thoughts with the latest crop circle news. Check it out!

The "Obe One Kinobi" pair of beds

I designed and started making these beds during 1989 in my spare time. The desire to make something special for my children had been simmering for a long time. I had bought a very special log of Rippled Ash with a 40" diameter in 1984 and it was now dry and ready to go.

Obe One Kinobi, the old Jedi warrior in Star Wars, is a fictional hero of mine and I like the underlying theme in the films  between the Good and the Dark Side. I think he is a good icon for my children to follow hence the name.

That same feeling is why I chose Goddess Maat for the headboards. She was the Egyptian Goddess of Justice and Truth and represented the harmony and balance of the Universe. Other quirks are within the beds. Katanga and Airie and the hunt for the valve of mischief and the tulipwood inserts with P.L.H.T. in them.

The tail and headboards are from the very wide 1" thick centre boards with no joins. I built a honeycomb M.D.F. mould and steamed each piece for a day at around 92 degrees before pressing them into shape, knots and all.

Leyla and Bella's names are carved on the insides of the tailboards. The carvings are a type of deep relief quilting which gives the grain a more three dimensional feel and were done by Geoff Dean to a strict brief. The four rods with their diamond quilts, 1152 in all, are a tribute to Geoff's patience and skill. I finished them in 1992 working nearly full time for the last four weeks.
