The Fibonacci Table

The Fibonacci Table

40" x 27" x 16" high glass

In 1978 I designed a table called 3ML which meant "Memphis makes me laugh" and symbolises a circle rolling off a triangle, frozen in a moment of time. The Fibonacci Table is a development of 3ML including the proportions of The Golden Mean.

Leonardo Fibonacci (1170-1240) was an Italian mathematician who discovered the Fibonacci series 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89 etc. etc. (i.e. the sum of the two numbers preceding it). If you then back divide i.e. 89 ÷ 55 the mean works out to 1.618 which is the proportion of The Golden Mean.

This entire table is based around this proportion. The sequence, lines and letters are acid etched into the glass. The wood is English Brown Oak and the table costs £1185.

Nikita

18" x 10" x 46" high

Nikita is made of extraordinary wide rippled Sycamore topped off with Macassar Ebony. It was a rare figured tree that demanded some sculptural use, to display its grain. It's a very sexy clothes horse for jackets and short skirts with a jewellery dish on the top for the occasional diamond.

The carving is band sawn into shape and then rounded over with rasps and files. The Sharkskin Blue finish requires the wood to be boiled to open its pores. The stain is then applied and cut back after it's dried. After endless hand sanding the finished result achieves an incredible depth with a real 3D rippled effect. £585 to commission.

Nikita

Chair inspired by Gerrit Rietveld

This chair continues in my series inspired by Gerrit Rietveld. The wood is both crown and Birds Eye Maple. I specifically designed it to go with a desk I made in this style last year, although I feel it would be equally at home in a hallway or landing. £965 to commission in various woods.

Feathers of Light

48" x 36" x 96" high

Using neon acrylic for the Rave Tables, I soon realised what a great material it would be outside in garden furniture and sculpture. It truly lights up at dawn and dusk. The feathers are strips of fluorescent acrylic which move in the wind. The pieces are free-standing and can easily be moved for mowing etc, being hinged at the back. 

They cost £340 each and you can see a Rave Spiral "up a tree" in the background - these are £60 each. The colours available are the same as for Rave Tables.
