Sculptures from the 70's
Timber is alive and how it warps and cracks tests your skill into caressing and cajoling it into shape. It's a continual learning curve and it's this edginess as a material, that keeps me excited. I have chosen some of my old sculptures to show you. |

I was taught at school by Michael O'Connor, a brilliant sculptor who was
doing some great bandsaw relief work. The technique involves cutting up
the piece of wood, shaping it and then putting it back together again. You
can superimpose one timber or material on another ( as in the Looner
Cheeseboards). I love the flowing sensual lines, very fluid and
tactile and occasionally incorporate this into furniture.

I call this my "Organic work". It's the soft, female side and
further examples, using sensual relief carving done by hand, are The
Obe One Kinobi Beds, My
Lovers Desk and Dominiques
Beautifier. It's primarily working with the Z axis to create a depth.
When you have a fantastic piece of wood it's great to really "show it
off" by carving into it.
