Fibonacci Table and Skateboards

The Fibonacci Table Brown Oak and Glass 618 x 1000 x 509mm high
I designed and made the Fibonacci Table in 2000, inspired by my interest in the Golden Mean. I am intrigued as to whether there is a connection between the Golden Mean 1.618 and superstring theory. String theory has the potential of realising Einstein's long sought dream of a single, all encompassing theory of the Universe. Beyond a quark is a string and the maths to describe the length of a string comes out as 1.616 x 10 to the power of minus 33. The maths aside, the Fibo Table is the fourth upgrade of my original design in 1979 called 3ML (See Portfolio 4 Coffee Tables). I am delighted that it now has a new home in the Chairman's office of a large City Bank.

	Fireballs and a GS Fibreflex Board In 1977 I started a skateboard company with Geoff Rose called Looner Land Skates Ltd and we designed The Hedgehog wheel for grass and the Fireball speed wheel. You could sell square wheels in those boom days and we were mail ordering, wholesaling and retailing out of premises in Fulham. In 1980 the boom was over. Geoff went back to Australia and I went back to furniture. My company was called Hurricane Toke Ltd and after that Professional Woodworkers Ltd, which has now been shortened to P.W. Ltd.

Dave Jumping the Fire Ring Dave was a local kid in Fulham with more balls than hot dinners. This set was for an ad shoot and, as you can imagine, had to be achieved on the first take.

	Wheels, etc. Fireballs, Hedgehogs wooden pattern and steel tool for open casting. The Fireball set the speed record in 1977. Dave was strapped to a board and launched off a hill in Crystal Palace at a skateboard meet. He went through the electronic gate at 55mph and we held the record for about 4 weeks.

The Persuader The Persuader with Hedgehogs. Designed in 1977 by Johnny and Geoff. Instantly red-carded out of a skatepark in Newquay.
